"Felicity Huffman Breaks Silence on College Admissions Scandal: A Desperate Bid for Her Daughter's Future"
Emmy-winning actor Felicity Huffman has opened up about her involvement in the infamous college admissions bribery scheme, revealing the desperation she felt to secure a future for her daughter. In an interview with Los Angeles' KABC-TV, Huffman spoke for the first time since serving a short prison sentence for her role in the scandal orchestrated by Rick Singer, the mastermind behind "Operation Varsity Blues."
Huffman, known for her role in "Desperate Housewives," admitted to committing mail fraud and honest services mail fraud in connection to the scheme. She confessed to paying $15,000 to boost her daughter's SAT scores. Huffman served 11 days of a 14-day prison sentence, paid a $30,000 fine, and was ordered to undergo one year of supervised release and 250 hours of community service.
In the interview, Huffman candidly expressed that the bribery scheme initially felt like the "only option" to give her daughter a chance at a future. Reflecting on the pivotal moment, she shared, "It felt like I had to give my daughter a chance at a future, and so it was sort of like my daughter’s future, which meant I had to break the law."
Recalling the day her daughter took the altered exam, Huffman admitted to the internal conflict she experienced. While her daughter expressed typical pre-test nerves, Huffman grappled with guilt, urging herself to intervene. She lamented, "And to my undying shame, I didn’t.”
Huffman clarified that she didn't reach out to Singer with the intention to break the law, trusting his assurance that her daughter wouldn't get into the desired colleges without assistance. She acknowledged the hindsight realization that the decision was misguided but emphasized feeling compelled as a mother.
Despite the scandal, Huffman's daughter was accepted to Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Mellon University. Huffman expressed remorse for her actions, admitting a "debt and an apology" to the academic community, students, and families who genuinely work hard for their educational pursuits. She aims to use her experience to shed light on the Los Angeles-based reentry program for formerly incarcerated women, "A New of Life."
As Huffman returns to television, her story serves as a cautionary tale about the lengths some parents may go to secure opportunities for their children, highlighting the broader issues within the competitive landscape of college admissions.
